Emerson College in Boston, Massachusetts hired Asim in 2010 to work as an associate professor of writing, literature, and publishing. From 2008 to 2010, Asim served as a scholar-in-residence in African American Studies and in the Department of Journalism at the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign and, in 2009, he was awarded the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation fellowship in the general nonfiction category. He remained in this role until he became editor-in-chief of the NAACP’s magazine, The Crisis, in 2007. The Washington Post Book World was a weekly book section in which Asim wrote, assigned, and edited reviews. when he was hired by the Washington Post to serve as an assistant editor before becoming senior editor of the newspaper’s Book World in 1999. Here, he would take on the additional role of arts editor of the weekend section and, in 1993, he was made book editor. By 1990, he was promoted to senior editor of the magazine where he ran the magazine’s literary section until 1992, when he became a copy editor for the St. ![]() In 1988, Asim was hired by the startup African American publication, Take Five magazine, as a contributing writer. He graduated from Southwest High School in 1980, and attended Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. Author and magazine editor Jabari Asim was born on Augin St. ![]() ![]() ![]() But inside the new copies they receive is yet another novel: one in a dead language called Cimmerian and titled Leaning from the steep slope-which Ludmilla's professor at the university is an expert on. And when the Reader (now enrolled as a full-fledged, understandably puzzled character) goes to his bookstore to exchange copies, he meets there a woman, Ludmilla, whose copy of the Traveler novel was similarly frustrated by faulty binding. and then suddenly Calvino's beginning has been succeeded by the opening of a wholly other and different novel: Outside the town of Malbork, written by a Pole! What's going on? A mistake in binding, it turns out. Urged to shut off the TV, remove shoes, and lie back, the reader is then introduced to a Chirico-esque railroad-station scene in which "the lights of the station and the sentences you are reading seem to have the job of dissolving more than of indicating the things that surface from a veil of darkness and fog." In this story, a traveler is supposed to meet someone, exchange something. ![]() This is a book about reading books, about the shivery comedy of that act. A romp-a grand Calvino-style romp, complete with a fun-house tilt, a high-gloss (but consistently good-humored) elegance, and a big, telescoping, central conceit. ![]() ![]() ![]() Gr 5-8 Donnelly, perhaps best-known for her lush and emotionally resonant historical fiction, tries her hand at middle-grade fantasy. ![]() Readers will eagerly await future volumes and the answers they will provide.-Kristi Sadowski. Quick-witted, loveable characters and a well-planned fantasy world make this an all-encompassing book. Friendship, trust, and responsibility are major themes as Sera struggles to grasp that she is really her kingdom's only hope. Donnelly then adds layers of complexity to the tale and weaves her story into that of Atlantis. It starts with a common enough concept: a royal girl who is worried about her betrothal and about love. ![]() A fantastic addition to the genre of mermaids, this book will also appeal to readers of action and those who appreciate usurped leaders taking back their kingdom. Barely escaping with her life and her freedom, she is left with no choice but to seek out the ancient force-no more than a legend, really-that has haunted her dreams but may, at least, provide answers. She knows what is expected of her, but is she really ready to rule? That is the question Sera must answer when tragedy strikes and her kingdom and parents are taken captive.
